The third part of this series focus on songs that are in none of the languages featured before. Enjoy!
Luke Evans - Love Is A Battlefield
The dude can act, can dance, and also can sing! And this cover of Pat Benatar’s mega hit is definitely a good start for this list.
Blue Öyster Cult – Astronomy
Covered with great virtuosity by Metallica, the original song is a masterpiece.
I Monster — Lust for a Vampyr
Great uplifting song that will accompany you on any weather, at any time of the day.
Ava Max - Kings & Queens
I have no idea how I didn’t know about this song before. Catchy, colourful, with a great theme. This is women empowerment done right.
Paolo Nutini - Iron Sky
Another old song that I should have known about way earlier.
OK Go — I Won’t Let You Down
Just as expected from OK Go, a good (and old) song with an impressive video (like all OK Go videos are), shot in one continuous take. Absolutely brilliant. I also recommend The One Moment and Obsession, good listens and great videos.
Bicep — Glue
Filled with nostalgia and a great video, this will definitely give you goosebumps while sending you on a trip down memory lane.
Pendulum, Joey Valence & Brae - Napalm
After their awesome EP, Anima, released in 2023, Pendulum released this banger with Joey Valence & Brae.
The Yogscast - Diggy Diggy Hole
When game music meets meme, you get an awesome call to arms song like this one. Dig!
O’Hara - Kiss from a Rose
The O’Hara sisters are classy, just like always, and they deliver a beautiful rendition of “Kiss from a Rose”
Freemasons feat. Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)
Sophie Ellis-Bextor is not only gorgeous, but also provides an angelic voice on some very strong bangers.
Low - Violence
BIG OOF. This song hits in all the possible ways and is one of the best songs I’ve discovered this year. The album is so good, I even made a bootleg of it.
The Phantoms - “Made For This”
Indie, uplifting, empowering. Be warned, Listening this song three times in a row might make you slap your boss!
Thorr - Overlord
Heard in Nikita’s stream, a great party banger from DJ Rahmet! I have to admit, I kind of missed this aggressive DnB style.
Kenya Grace - It’s not fair
What is this? Liquid dubstep in 2024? Yes, it is, and Kenya does a great job at it.
Teddy Swims - Devil in a Dress (Live)
50% mobster, 50% comic book villain, 50% cage fighter, 100% pure raw talent when it comes to singing, he’s the definition of “don’t judge a book by its cover”. Awesome music.
Tony Joe White - Bayou Woman
One of the greatest American Blues singers out there. I had to look through the archives of my blog, because I was sure I mentioned songs by him before, but I somehow didn’t. “Bayou Woman” is below, but also try I Want To Be With You, You’re Gonna Look Good in Blues and Ain’t Going Down This Time
Chris Rea - Only To Fly
Since I’ve been talking about Tony Joe White earlier, I can’t skip Chris Rea, which is an artist I’ve known for a long time, but only this year got to delve a bit deeper in his works.
While everyone knows about “Auberge”, “The Blue Cafe”, “Josephine” and “Julia”, I’ve learned about his passion for cars, and his driving related songs (“Road to Hell”, “Driving Home For Christmas”, am i right?), discovered other awesome road songs, like “Daytona”, “Texas”, as well as the great “Fool If You Think Its Over”.
Got a really nice box set of his “La Passione” movie and documentary, the first DVD has re-edited original and new short films to complement the music along with an interview with Chris between each piece, while the second DVD features a documentary on Wolfgang Von Trips – the Ferrari racing driver who Chris followed as a youngster and who subsequently died racing at the Italian Grand Prix in 1961 – made up entirely of unseen film reels from the Von Trips family archive.
Twenty One Pilots - Navigating
Released this year, Clancy is not only a great TØP album, but also a collection of videos that form a good story. Try the entire story on this album, starting with Overcompensate and up to Paladin Strait, or even watch the entire story so far.
Portugal. The Man - Atomic Man
With an artist name so funny, you know you’re going to get some really nice indie music.
Everything But The Girl - No One Knows We’re Dancing
EBTG is back, baby! After a long break, they brought some great songs into the world and I’m happy that they didn’t stray from their deep electric moody vibe.
Everything But The Girl - Nothing Left To Lose
Same as above :)
Eric Hilton - Amor Astral (feat. Natalia Clavier)
Founding member of Thievery Corporation along with one of his stagemates created a soft and cuddly song with bossa nova influences.
Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros — Mondo Bongo
Chilling with a guitar should be the status quo for every one of us.
such is life
Hammock - I Can Almost See You
Hazy, chill, perfect for a relaxing late night.
Cannons - Fire for You
It’s late at night and you need some deep beats and some nice vocals? Cannons it is!
Ash - Shining Light (Official HD Video)
The Undertones - Teenage Kicks (Official Video)
She Wants Revenge - Tear You Apart
The Jesus And Mary Chain - Just Like Honey (Official Music Video)
How Soon Is Now - Johnny Marr Live At The Crazy Face Factory
I had no fucking clue that the Tatu song is a cover, and especially after The fucking Smiths. Now I know and my life is so much better for it.
Angus & Julia Stone — Crash And Burn
Great song by the Stone siblings, can’t believe this sat for 10 years under the dust and still has less than half a mil views. Mad.
Gerry Cinnamon - Belter
Of course there’s gonna be a song from the guy that shares the name with the best spice in the world. Also the song is bonkers as well.
For Those I Love - I Have a Love
These Irish boys know how to deliver an excellent song that will stay in your mind for weeks.
I have a love, and it never fades Now a long way from school days, Sharing books at big break.
KNEECAP - C.E.A.R.T.A
Can’t bring Irish people up without mentioning Kneecap, the phenomenon that put Gaelic on the map. Gonna link the original video, but you can see here the lyrics and their English translation.
John Frusciante — The Will To Death
If being sad was a superpower, John Frusciante would be Aquaman. Or something. His heartfelt songs strike right in the soul and his entire solo albums are therapeutic.
maybeshewill — Red Paper Lanterns
If sounds can be represented by colours, this song is a explosion of a million cans of paint filmed in slow motion.
FLOOR CRY - Happy Together
Found at the end of an episode of The Penguin, it’s both haunting and beautiful.
The Longest Heartbreak - Ghost Walking (feat. Mihai Andrei)
JadaL - Ashrar | جدل - اشرار
This is a masterpiece talking about pain and suffering. It explains a lot about some people. Definitely check the lyrics out.
For Spotify users
In the end, for people that are using Spotify, here’s also a playlist of the songs I liked in 2024. Put it on shuffle and enjoy!
Also, keep an eye open, there are still a couple of “best of” articles I’m about to post next week!
