HOOOOOLY SHIT. What a good little game! I started this without knowing too much about the game itself. So I just went it and landed in a big emotional roller-coaster. The game time itself is pretty short, like 5-6 hours for a relaxed play-through.
The prologue is an emotional short story where you get to choose some things, without impacting the story too much, but really sets the mood and you get to know the back-story of Henry (the main character), which you are playing.
The prologue ends with Henry starting a new job, in a fire watch tower in Wyoming. The only person he can communicate with is his co-worker from a different tower, located in the next sector. The game is then divided into “days”, and each day you have something to do. Just like in life, some days are longer, some are shorter, and sometimes weeks pass without notable stuff happening.
Various forest things happen, a connection is made, an adventure has started. Even if you have various dialogue options with some weight on the short term, the story itself is linear and will always lead to the same conclusions.
Regardless, it’s still very fun to play, mysterious, intriguing, has some twists and turns and even manages to trick you at some point. While it has a few scenes that are a bit creepy, there aren’t any jump-scares. In all of its vast loneliness, Firewatch lifts a spooky story to stressful, but it’s not a horror game, more of an interactive thriller.
The landscapes are beautiful, the graphics are cartoonish, but well made and the world is beautiful.
Yep, 6 joysticks, that good.
