Half-Life is a 1998 first-person shooter (FPS) game developed by Valve and published by Sierra Studios for Windows. It was Valve’s debut product and the first game in the Half-Life series. Players assume the role of Gordon Freeman, a scientist who must escape the Black Mesa Research Facility after it is invaded by aliens during an experiment gone wrong. The gameplay consists of combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving.

There’s not much to say about Half-Life. I guess everyone that ever touched a computer played this game to some extent, or at least one of its spinoff mods (Hey, kids, did you know CS:GO is based on this?) or sequels (HL2, HL: Alyx and the soon-will-be-released Half-Life 3).

Twenty-five years later, this is still an awesome game, being remastered and remixed in various ways and becoming one of the most famous game franchises in the history of mankind (and aliens).

Every five-six years I replay it from start to finish, but now decided to replay only the first chapter on the SteamDeck (more about this in a different post), for the lulz and kicks. I could have played the remastered (Half-Life: Source) version, but stuck with the OG one, as it’s closer to my experience as a teenager.

All in all, this game definitely gets five joysticks and lands into what I call the Gaming Vault. Get it from Steam or from your 20+ year old pirated CD.
