As any kid who had a Terminator Nintendo-clone back in the day, we all wanted to played the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle games, but the only one we could get our hands on was something weird, arcade-y, fast-paced and with funny looking turtles. Even their names were different, as they were called Zitz, Rash and Pimple! But we were 10 years old and we didn’t care. We just liked our game, which we learned a few years later is was actually called “Battletoads”
So I was very happy when I found the new one being on sale on Steam (or was it Humble Bundle? I don’t really recall), so I purchased it and installed it, hoping for some nice fun games. The animations are weird, they look a bit like Teen Titans, so it kind of makes some sense, if you consider the game’s rating is 10+, so while it tries to capitalize on the older generation nostalgia factor, it tries to get the attention of kids too. Also there’s like 20 minutes of cutscenes in the first 5 minutes of gameplay.
The control seems overcomplicated, with weird button combos and a fairly steep learning curve, while the combat (which should be the main component of the game!) is barely passable. I did a few levels, but got bored of it fairly fast, as the story is meh and the combat is really off-putting. At least the animations are well made, the levels are fairly different and have different challenges to overcome, but not enough to keep me entertained.
I saw that this is usually $20, but I’d avoid paying more than $5, and even that’s a stretch. Two joysticks.
