In 1951, a blacklisted Hollywood writer gets into a car accident, loses his memory and settles down in a small town where he is mistaken for a long-lost son.
What happens when you get Jim Carrey (coming straight after “Man on the Moon”, “Me, Myself & Irene”, and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”) and Frank Darabont (whose previous movies “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Green Mile” were masterpieces)? Add a bit of Bob Balaban, Martin Landau, Hal Holbrock and Laurie Holden, sprinkle some David Ogden Stiers and what you get is an excellent drama. While credited for being one of the early “serious” movies starring Jim Carrey, it took him out of the “very funny” movies and put him into the “incredibly versatile” category of actors. And while Jim Carrey is very good, Martin Landau is absolutely Majestic in the role of the father. Seven popcorns and goes into the Movie Vault.
