IMDb

A group of very different individuals with different ideas of how to face the end come together as the world is expected to end in six hours at the turn of the century

Excellent absurdist dark comedy about people spending the last hours before the end of the world, each with their way of coping with the situation, with interesting stories intertwining into a masterpiece movie. It has an incredible cast: David Cronenberg, Sarah Polley, Genevieve Bujold, Sandra Oh, Callum Keith Rennie, and the Director Don McKellar. It’s deliciously quirky and just the kind of film that is ripe for rediscovery by old and new. Seven popcorns and goes into the Movie Vault.

IMDb

The football team of a small town is relegated and ends up in the third division, so new people, goals and results are needed to return to the second division. The head of the “operation” is comrade Zmeu (Petre Gheorghiu), who has an idea every time it is needed. He recruits four coaches instead of one and establishes the Femina club, made up of the players’ wives, to support them in home matches, as well as away matches.

Excellent small comedy starring some of the best actors of the time. It’s sad that it’s pretty unknown because it got cancelled the day after the premiere because the Communist Party didn’t like showing people who get creative with scams. All in all it’s a fun comedy and it’s partly filmed in my hometown, so that makes it so cool. Five popcorns and jumps into the Movie Vault.

Idle Hands (1999)

Idle Hands (1999)

IMDb

Anton Tobias (Devon Sawa, Final Destination) is a channel-surfing, junk-food-munching, couch-potato burn-out who can’t control the murderous impulses of his recently possessed hand. With the help of his zombiefied buddies, Mick (Seth Green, Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery) and Pnub (Elden Henson, Daredevil), Anton’s got to stop the rampaging devil appendage before it takes total control of his life and ruins any chance he has with class hottie Molly (Jessica Alba, Dark Angel). Vivica A. Fox (Kill Bill) and Jack Noseworthy (Event Horizon) co-star in this wickedly funny horror comedy.

This is the best bad movie I’ve ever seen. I recall seeing it like 15-20 years ago on TV and I was like “wtf is this shit, it’s brilliant!”. It’s raunchy, has a bit of gore, but in a funny way and it feels like an action-movie Scooby-Doo episode at points. It’s bonkers, it’s filled with pop culture references, it has the classical 90s super-band playing a gig at the small town high-school prom, all the fun 90s-early 2000 shit. This is “horror” American Pie and it’s lovely. Six popcorns and jumps into the Movie Vault. And no, it’s not because we see barely legal Jessica Alba’s butt.

Expendables 4 (2023)

Expendables 4 (2023)

IMDb

A new generation of stars join the world’s top action stars for an adrenaline-fueled adventure in Expend4bles. Reuniting as the team of elite mercenaries, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, and Sylvester Stallone are joined for the first time by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, and Andy Garcia. Armed with every weapon they can get their hands on and the skills to use them, The Expendables are the world’s last line of defense and the team that gets called when all other options are off the table. But new team members with new styles and tactics are going to give “new blood” a whole new meaning.

Same old shit, same old people, some new ones. The writing is meh and the story is predictable, but it makes for a decent pew pew movie. Three popcorns because it has Megan Fox in it.

James May: Our Man In India (2023)

IMDb

Season 2 ・ James May takes on his greatest adventure yet: a 3,000 mile coast-to-coast epic across India, the most populous – and perhaps most extraordinary – country in the world.

After two very good first seasons in Japan and Italy, James May lands in almighty India. The season is disappointing on many levels, as it consist of only three episodes and only a very small part of India. I didn’t like the guide at all and as colourful as the show looks, and instead of making me go “ooh” and “aah” about the place, it just reinforced my “ew”. Two popcorns.

A documentary about Stanisław Latałło, main actor in “Illumination” by Krzysztof Zanussi (1972). He wanted to be a director, he first worked as a director of photography with Tadeusz Konwicki on “So far, so close”, then became a cult figure when “Illumination” won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno film festival. He then accompanied the Polish Himalaya Expedition to Mount Lhotse in 1974, as a cameraman, and died there. He was 29. This film is a very personal reflection about his fate, with the participation of family and friends, well-known figures of Polish Cinema such as Agnieszka Holland, Krzysztof Zanussi, Tadeusz Konwicki, told in the first person perspective by the director of this film, his son Marcin Latałło.

After watching “The Illumination”, and learning about the tragic fate of the main actor, Stanisław Latałło, I also learned about this short documentary (26 minutes) made by his son, Marcin Latałło. Five popcorns and it goes into the Movie Vault, not only because it’s good, but also because I found only one result of it online, and has 300 views, so if it’s gone, it’s lost forever.

Tabloid life of a physicist; his work, his love life and his quest for the meaning beyond.

This is not a typical movie. It has no set storyline, it just follows the life of protagonist Franciszek over the span of a few years. We get to know the main character on his journey towards knowledge, sharing his life experiences, hardships and joys. I loved the performance of the protagonist, Stanisław Latałło, which literally makes the entire movie a masterpiece. Unfortunately he passed away in December 1974, while being as a cameraman of the Polish Himalayan expedition. This movie gets 6 popcorns and gets into the Movie Vault.

During the ’90s, a new faction of Transformers - the Maximals - join the Autobots as allies in the battle for Earth.

We get new transformers, more diversity because why not, some action, good effects, no famous actors and feels very long, even though it’s 2 hours and 7 minutes. I really liked the franchise, but th people that made this movie didn’t understand that the success of the first movies were caused by Megan Fox’s tail. Three popcorns, and deserves a slap for the name of the “Optimus Primal” monkey character.

Against the backdrop of a war between humans and robots with artificial intelligence, a former soldier finds the secret weapon, a robot in the form of a young child.

Good sci-fi flick, with a lot of cyberpunk elements that enchants the viewer not only with a decent story, but also with good acting and good special effects. A good blend between District 9, Star Wars and Matrix, at the end of the day it’s a very good movie, gets four popcorns.

House of Tolerance // L'Apollonide (2011)

IMDb

At an elegant Parisian bordello at the dawn of the 20th century exists a cloistered world of pleasure, pain, hope, rivalries–and, most of all, slavery.

Some people keep complaining about the lack of plot in this movie, and they are not wrong. While not a bad movie, it’s not a movie at all, it’s like a painting that keeps moving for a couple of hours and then nothing. The costumes and the music are actually really nice, and the realistic view on the world of brothels and the people inside them is nice. But without a proper story, the movie seems bland, and not even the excess of nudity can make this interesting. Two popcorns.

Gym manager Lou falls for Jackie, a bodybuilder who is passing through town en route to a competition in Las Vegas.

Great thriller, with great music composed by Clint Mansell and a role that makes me like Kristen Stewart even more. Ed Harris was a great addition to a great cast, the general vibe of the movie is dark and it captures the end of the 80s perfectly. Four popcorns and definitely a recommendation to watch.
