15 Storeys High (2002โ€“2004)

๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ / 5

IMDb

The lives of two men sharing a flat in South London.

Just as with any British comedy show, half of it is dumb as rocks, while the other half is absolutely brilliant and make you spit your tea laughing. Sean Lock was a great comedian, and it can be seen both in his writing and his acting, and Benedict Wong does a brilliant job at playing the housemate. Four popcorns, because it’s an acquired taste and alternates great moments with “meh” ones.

Citadel: Diana (2024)

Citadel: Diana (2024)

๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ / 5

IMDb

In 2030 Milan, an undercover agent for the global spy agency Citadel is trapped behind enemy lines as a mole in the powerful enemy syndicate Manticore.

Diana Cavalieri (Matilda De Angelis), an undercover Citadel agent, is trapped behind enemy lines as a mole in Manticore. When she finally sees a way out and the chance to disappear forever, the only way to do so is trusting the most unexpected ally, Edo Zani (Lorenzo Cervasio), the heir of Manticore Italy and son of the head of the Italian organization, Ettore Zani (Maurizio Lombardi), whoโ€™s vying for leadership against the other European families. Based on the original TV Series, Citadel (which I will start after this one), it’s a fairly common futuristic spy agency tv series. Think Nikita (the TV series with Peta Wilson, from the 90s), but with better effects and similar kind of conspiracies. Four popcorns for a really nice watch. Also, it’s in Italian ๐ŸคŒ

In other news, what the fuck is with all these futuristic movies having characters with fucked up hairstyles?

Behind Her Eyes (2021)

Behind Her Eyes (2021)

๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ / 5

IMDb

It follows Louise, a single mum with a son and a part-time job in a psychiatrist’s office. She begins an affair with her boss and strikes up an unlikely friendship with his wife.

Well this is how you do a proper psychological thriller mini series. You start slow, but not boring, and start unfolding the stories adding some misdirection until things eventually start to make sense (or lose any sense altogether). Brilliantly written and masterfully acted, this is a great miniseries that will definitely go to the Movie Vault.

Spain, 1981: When armed men hold up a bank and take hundreds hostage, a reporter races against the authorities to uncover the true motive for the heist

Good little mini-series, the Spanish are doing a great job keeping the suspense. Five popcorns.

Secret Level (2024-)

Secret Level (2024-)

๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ / 5

IMDb

Original stories set within the worlds of iconic video games are featured in this animated anthology series.

To be fair, I didn’t even know about many of these games, so I find the “this is an ad” approach fairly interesting. Some episodes are really good, some are only pretty, some are just meh. I’ll explain each one by one, along with my familiarity of the title:

1. Dungeons and Dragons

All fantasy games are somehow based on D&D and the episode is not only pretty, but also good. Loved it! 7x๐Ÿฟ

2. Sifu

I had this on my wishlist for some time, and while it’s not my favourite kind of game, the episode was absolutely great! 7x๐Ÿฟ

3. New World

Didn’t know about the game, but the video was absolutely brilliant! Loved the voice of Arnold Schwarzenegger as King Aelstrom and the story is decent. 5x๐Ÿฟ

4. Unreal Tournament

Playing a lot of UT in all its incarnations, I have to say this episode was excellently done. Loved to see the weapons, the teams and the re-imagined robots. Brilliant! 9x๐Ÿฟ

5. Warhammer 40k

The Warhammer lore is immense and this episode for someone that never touched it, you couldn’t get a better introduction to the universe. 5x๐Ÿฟ

6. Pac-Man

Lovely thriller/horror/fantasy based on the Pac-Man game. This is the most creative so far and it’s well done. 5x๐Ÿฟ

7. Crossfire

Another huge game that I didn’t know about. Really well made warzone/action episode, although not my cup of tea. 3x๐Ÿฟ

8. Armored Core

Another brilliant game I never learned about. This fast-paced action episode starring Keanu as Keanu is the perfect introduction to a brilliant cyberpunk universe. 5x๐Ÿฟ

9. The Outer Worlds

The action RPG created by the same people that created Fallout gets a good colourful retro-futuristic steampunky episode with a good moral story. 5x๐Ÿฟ

10. Mega Man

Another brilliant episode based on a game I played a lot as a kid (Rockman by its Japanese name). This is a brilliant starting point for something that would work really nice as a cinematic universe. 5x๐Ÿฟ

11. Exodus

This is a game that hasn’t even been released, but man, the video is selling it hard. 4x๐Ÿฟ

12. Spelunky

Spelunky is another nice game that I’ve never got to playing because of its difficulty, but the episode is really funny and throws some really nice punches at the gameplay. 4x๐Ÿฟ

13. Concord

At least something remained behind Concord, the Overwatch-clone made by Sony that was scrapped only 2 weeks after release. While sporting a good cyberpunk theme, the short movie is fine as a Guardians of the Galaxy clone. See a pattern? Yeah, that’s why it failed. 3x๐Ÿฟ

14. Honor of Kings

Confucius say: play go to be more Confusius. Nice execution, but the story is meh. 3x๐Ÿฟ

15. Playtime

Just skip this. While not based on a game, it shows what’s wrong with the gaming industry in 2025: shiny colours, neon lightning, hardcore gamification. It features some cameos from some Playstation franchises, but all in all it seems a Playstation advert made for damn 10 year old kids with 3 seconds attention span, but created by people who never actually saw a kid in their life. This is just slop. No ๐Ÿฟ for this junk.

IMDb

After Santa Claus is kidnapped, the North Pole’s Head of Security must team up with a notorious hacker in a globe-trotting, action-packed mission to save Christmas.

Definitely a great holidays watch. It’s funny, has some good effects and gives a nice spin on the Santa story. Not to mention the good combo of Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, the great skills of Lucy Liu and the brilliant performance of J.K. Simmons as another old man. Five popcorns for a definitely fun watch.

IMDb

The night manager of a Cairo hotel is recruited to infiltrate an arms dealer’s inner circle.

Great suspense mini-series, loved seeing Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman and Hugh Laurie in the same production. A bit unrealistic at points, but still a very enjoyable watch. Six popcorns and I can’t wait for the next season to be released in 2025.

IMDb

After peaceful aliens invade Earth, humanity finds itself living in a utopia under the indirect rule of the aliens, but does this utopia come at a price?

Great mini series based on the novel written in the 50s by Arthur C. Clarke, featuring excellent visuals, good screenwriting and a great cast, including Mike Vogel, Osy Ikhile, Daisy Betts, Ashley Zukerman and the great Charles Dance. Was also lovely to see Yael Stone as well (which I remembered from OINTB). Great watch, although they went a bit too sappy with the love relationships. Five popcorns and jumps into the Movie Vault.

Squid Game - Season 2 (2024)

Squid Game - Season 2 (2024)

๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ / 5

IMDb

Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the states and comes back with a new resolution in his mind. Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.

Something something conspiracy, something something going back, this series didn’t feel only slow to develop, but also a bit boring and didn’t made me care too much about the characters (old or new). Last episode is 45 minutes of shooting. Two popcorns for a pale shadow of the first series and I’m waiting to see where they push the story in the third and final season.

Sorcerer (1977)

Sorcerer (1977)

๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ / 5

IMDb

Four unfortunate men from different parts of the globe agree to risk their lives transporting gallons of nitroglycerin across dangerous Latin American jungle.

What seems to be a remake of “The Wages of Fear” (original title: “Le Salaire de la peur”) is based on the novel with the same name, it’s reat thriller with a great cast and with a good cinematic mood. The music by Tangerine Dream makes it even better and in the end, it’s a great watch, despite being a box office flop. I know Roy Scheider is not Yves Montand, and 1970s Hollywood is not 1950s European cinema, but it’s still a good movie on its own. Five popcorns.

Venom: The Last Dance (2024)

๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ / 5

IMDb

Eddie Brock and Venom must make a devastating decision as they’re pursued by a mysterious military man and alien monsters from Venom’s home world

One of the decent movies of 2024, even if it felt a bit shallow and lacked pretty much any character depth, it was still a decent watch. You’ve got explosions, baddies that just won’t die and a resolution that was visible from twenty miles away. Not great, not terrible. Three popcorns.
