Mindwalk (1990)
Philosophical conversations between a poet, politician, and scientist.
A lot of talk about a lot of subjects, basically the kind of talk you have after a couple of drinks with your smartest friend. It does touch a lot of good talking points and pokes them with some good arguments. All in all, six popcorns for this strong and good lecture in philosophy, science and life, in the shape of a movie that can also be a very good theater play.
That’s physics!
That’s poetry!
That’s wonderful!

The Edge // Край (2010)
In 1945, Soviet war hero Ignat is sent to work as a locomotive mechanic in a Siberian labor camp where he meets an assortment of Germans and Russians.
“The Edge” is a story of suppressed passion and destructive obsession set in a remote post WWII Siberian village sparkled by the arrival of Ignat, an emotionally and physically damaged Soviet tank commander with an obsession for steam engines. His self destructive streak causes increasing havoc until he makes an astonishing discovery in the forest. Elsa is a German girl who had lived in an old steam engine in the forest for four years. Despite no common past or culture, by protecting Elsa, Ignat discovers how he can save himself. When they return to the village with the locomotive they have christened “Gustav”, a head to head, a winner-takes-all locomotive race will decide their fate. The only question is how much strength and fury can there be in one man, in his battle to assert his identity and to defend his love and eventually to become the winner … or forever remain a spirit trapped, never to be free. Five popcorns and goes to the Movie Vault.

Arcane (2021-2024)
Amid the stark discord of twin cities Piltover and Zaun, two sisters fight on rival sides of a war between magic technologies and clashing convictions.
Excellent little animated miniseries based on characters and lore from the League of Legends game (which I don’t play, because I hate MMOBAs). The writing is decent, the animation style and music are superlative and there’s nothing that I can say is that I wish that the Warcraft universe would get a similar treatment. Six popcorns and jumps into the Movie Vault.

Suntan (2016)
On a hedonistic Greek island, a middle-aged doctor becomes obsessed with a young tourist when she lets him tag along with her group of hard partying friends.
It’s summer, it’s Greece, minds start going all over the place. Fun movie filmed in a beautiful location, with good acting from the main character and with good music. All in all, six popcorns for a movie that shows about 342 dicks. Gotta love European cinema.

Companion (2025)
A weekend getaway with friends at a remote cabin turns into chaos after it’s revealed that one of the guests is not what they seem.
This is not a new story and you’ve seen it in various forms in other movies and stories. It’s a good mix of sci-fi and thriller, with a lot of comic situations and funny lines, where nothing is what it seems to be. Five popcorns and it goes into the Movie Vault. Well actually six for the line

100 (1973)
In 1970s Romania a rebellious and erratic teenager is vying for his older step brother’s love and attention while envying his fame and lifestyle.
Excellent movie about the relationship between two brothers. Excellent psychological movie directed by Mircea Saucan, with absolutely great cinematography, starring the great Dan Nutu and Ion Dichiseanu. However, the best performance is definitely the one of Ileana Popovici in the role of Dora, the naive young girl. Seven popcorns for one of the best Romanian movies out there, even better than the ones made by Goddard and ses amis, that goes straight into the Movie Vault.

Zero Day (2025)
In the midst of crisis: how can we discover the truth when it seems that the world is being destroyed by uncontrollable forces? Also, to what extent are conspiracy theories our own inventions or products of our imagination?
Mixing conspiracy with improbable technology, what seemed to be a good tech show got turned into a political hullaballoo that not even Robert De Niro, nor Jesse Plemons, nor Matthew Modine could save. All in all, a nice conspiracy thriller, with a decent story and some good twists. Three popcorns.

Prea mic pentru un război atât de mare // Too Little for Such a Big War (1970)
A young boy becomes callous to the deaths and battles that rage during World War II.
Telling the story of a child that has to face the harsh, often tragic, reality of war. Ultimately, the movie is a poem, told in very expressive images, the cinematography being one of its strongest points. Sad and heartbreaking, the movie tells a story that seems it got forgotten by most nowadays. Six popcorns and goes into the Movie Vault, because history that’s forgotten is doomed to be repeated.

Renegade Nell (2024)
A quick-witted and courageous young woman framed for murder unexpectedly becomes the most notorious outlaw in 18th-century England. When a magical spirit called Billy appears, Nell realises her destiny is bigger than she ever imagined.
Excellent little series, too bad it was cancelled after only one season. The acting is nice, the story is a bit predictable, yet enjoyable to watch. The music is excellent and the adventures are well written. Five popcorns for a very good watch.

Avenue 5 (2020-2022)
The troubled crew of Avenue 5, a space cruise ship filled with spoiled, rich, snotty space tourists, must try and keep everyone calm after their ship gets thrown off course into space and ends up needing three years to return to Earth.
Set 40 years in the future when the solar system is the world’s oyster, Avenue 5 follows the captain and crew of a luxury space cruise ship as they navigate disgruntled passengers and unexpected events after experiencing technical difficulties onboard. Excellent comedy with a Hugh Laurie at the top of his comedy game. Six popcorns and jumps into the Movie Vault.

Severance - Season 2 (2022-)
In Severance, Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in “work-life balance” is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself.
In season two, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe. There are already six episodes out of the ten in this season, and I must say, the quality is great and it was definitely worth the wait. Not only the cinematography is stellar, but the acting and writing is absolutely excellent! Seven popcorns and can’t wait to see where the story goes.

Fortysomething (2003)
Paul Slippery, a middle-aged doctor in Putney, juggles family issues and mid-life woes when he suddenly develops the ability to hear others’ thoughts, adding chaos to his life.
Brilliant comedy surrounding the life of a man in his mid fourties and his crazy family. Hugh Laurie plays as the head of the family, with brilliant appearances from Benedict Cumberbatch, Anna Chancellor, Sheila Hancock, Peter Capaldi and may great other British actors. Excellent TV series that will make you tear with laughing. Yeah, definitely stays into the Movie Vault.
