8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown (2012-)

8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown (2012-)

🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 / 5

IMDb

A raunchy spoof edition of Countdown (1982) with the stars of 8 Out of 10 Cats (2005).

Half game show, half comedy panel, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown is a great watch. WEven after the loss of the great Sean Lock in 2021, the show still remains funny as hell. Just finished series 26 and I’m slowly progressing through other episodes. Raunchy, raw, brilliant. Seven popcorns, no doubt.

The Penguin (2024)

The Penguin (2024)

🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 / 5

IMDb

Following the events of The Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, a.k.a. the Penguin, makes a play to seize the reins of the crime world in Gotham.

Excellent rendition of the Penguin character and storyline. Collin Farrel does a great job playing the Penguin, the makeup is so great, I could barely realize it’s him. Cristin Millioti also does a great role. Six popcorns for a great mini-series.

Fack ju Göhte // Suck Me Shakespeer (2013)

Fack ju Göhte // Suck Me Shakespeer (2013)

🍿🍿🍿🍿 / 5

IMDb

A comedy that follows an ex-convict who lands a position at a school that sits over the spot where money from one of his earlier robberies was stashed.

Funny little piece of comedy, absurd at some points and a bit childish, but it makes up for a great Sunday evening watch. Four popcorns for this recommendation from Æero.

New Kids Nitro (2011)

New Kids Nitro (2011)

🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 / 5

IMDb

Gerrie, Richard, Rikkert, Robbie and Barry from Maaskantje are in a big fight with the village of Schijndel. When a zombie kills someone from Brabant, things get out of hand.

Sequel to the New Kids Turbo, it’s just as bonkers and as funny. Recommended by Maria, of course. Five popcorns and goes into the Movie Vault.

New Kids Turbo (2010)

New Kids Turbo (2010)

🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 / 5

IMDb

Five friends from ‘Maaskantje’ are getting fired because of the economic crisis. They decide that they won’t pay for anything anymore.

Based on the New Kids on the Block TV show, this Dutch comedy is something out of this world. It’s raunchy, funny, gorey, and I love the fact that they use “cunt” (kut) as a punctuation mark. Six popcorns f for a great movie that goes into the Movie Vault.

Great recommendation from Maria, who did the Dutch version of the “Lost in Translation” article a while back.

Der Schuh des Manitu // Manitou's Shoe (2001)

Der Schuh des Manitu // Manitou's Shoe (2001)

🍿🍿🍿🍿 / 5

IMDb

The hilarious adventures of two best friends, Apache chief Abahachi and cowboy Ranger, in the Wild West.

Absurd and funny, made in 2001, but with a feeling of the 70s, it feels similar to the likes of “Hot Shots!” and “Robin Hood: Men in Tights”, but with a western theme. Germans really nailed this one and it’s a good comedy. Four popcorns.

This is the first movie recommended by Æero in his “Lost and Found in Translation” interview.

Kneecap (2024)

Kneecap (2024)

🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 / 5

IMDb

When fate brings Belfast teacher JJ into the orbit of self-confessed ’low life scum’ Naoise and Liam Og, the needle drops on a hip hop act like no other. Rapping in their native Irish, they lead a movement to save their mother tongue.

Great movie about culture and standing up for yourself, written by and starring the three members of the band Kneecap. Grand watch, six popcorns and lands into the Movie Vault.

Second recommendation from Draí, looks like Irish cinema is delivering some strong punches lately.

An Cailín Ciúin // The Quiet Girl (2022)

An Cailín Ciúin // The Quiet Girl (2022)

🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 / 5

IMDb

In rural Ireland, a quiet, neglected girl is sent away from her dysfunctional family to live with relatives for the summer where she blossoms and learns what it is to be loved.

Such a heartfelt wee movie! It’s slow, it takes its time to slowly unfold itself and the story within. It’s emotional, the music is great, the acting (especially of the wee Catherine Clinch as Cáit, but also Carrie Crowley’s as Eibhlín) is spot on. Definitely one of the best movies I’ve seen this year, and it goes into the Movie Vault.

This is first movie that was pulled from the “Lost and Found in Translation” series, and it was suggested by Draí.

Le Mans (1971)

Le Mans (1971)

🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 / 5

IMDb

Two car racing champions, an American and a German, face off on the world’s hardest endurance course: Le Mans in France.

Can a movie about cars be a musical? Sure it can! Starring the great Steve McQueen, it’s a proper racing movie, about cars, about racing. None of the love mumbo-jumbo, none of the filler content you get in modern movies. Definitely a classic that is hard to topple. Seven popcorns without a doubt and races towards the Movie Vault.

Double Dragon (1994)

Double Dragon (1994)

🍿🍿🍿🍿 / 5

IMDb

Two brothers have half of a powerful ancient Chinese talisman. An evil gang leader has the other half, and determines to get the brothers’ half and have a complete medallion so he can gain absolute power.

Based on the game that also gave us one of the coolest cartoon series of the 90s, this movie is absolute shit. It’s coming from a weird time where studios would be bringing big names (Robert Patrick, Mark Dacascos, Scott Wolf) into a series of movies based on successful franchises from other media (remember Street Fighter with JCVD and Raoul Julia? Or the Mortal Kombat movies of the 90s?). Objectively, it’s a bad movie, but a cult classic nevertheless. I’m surprised I didn’t know about it until now, considering Alyssa Milano is starring as well. Four popcorns.

The Remarkable Life of Ibelin (2024)

The Remarkable Life of Ibelin (2024)

🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 / 5

IMDb

Mats Steen, a Norwegian gamer, died of a degenerative muscular disease at the age of 25. His parents mourned what they thought had been a lonely and isolated life, when they started receiving messages from online friends around the world.

This is a hard movie to watch, it’s sad and it hits close to home, being a WoW player. A sad, but somehow uplifting story, that tells us that friendships and human relationships transcede the physical world. Six popcorns and goes into the Movie Vault.

Legion (2017-2019)

Legion (2017-2019)

🍿🍿🍿🍿 / 5

IMDb

David Haller is a troubled young man diagnosed as schizophrenic, but after a strange encounter he discovers special powers that will change his life forever.

Set in the X-Men shared universe, it’s got some kid of mutants, weird technology. It’s trippy, weird, cinematic and pretty hard to watch sometimes. It does get pretty weird sometimes and this is both its doing and undoing. It’s a good show, but don’t expect action galore, as it’s pretty slow burning and a cinematic experience. Four popcorns.
