Time of the Gypsies (1988)
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in the past few years. It hits hard with the harsh realism of Romany communities at the end of the 80s in the Balkans. The story circles around Perhan, a young kid gifted with supernatural powers that gets pulled into the world of crime. It mixes surrealism with the bleak life of poor families, beautifully blending drama and comedy elements alike, in the way that made Kusturica famous. All these with a beautiful soundrack signed by Goran Bregovic.
Accidentally, I discovered that this movie was aired on Sarajevo television in a mini-series format, consisting of five one-hour episodes, version which has also been published in Russia in a double-DVD package. If you happen to have one or to know someone that has it, please send it to me.
However, I was lucky enough to find more info about this version at kustu.com, including a short description of the missing chapters, along with some screenshots. So if you already saw the movie, (spoiler alert!)check them out here, they’re filled with artistic gems that make the long version even better than the theatrical release.
Even if the trailer is in English, do yourself a favour and watch the movie in its original Romany language.

Sing 2 (2021)
Just as any other Illumination animation (Minions, Despicable Me, etc), this movie has an impressive voice cast: Matthew McConaughigheihgeyhguehey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Chelsea Peretti <3, Bono, Bobby Cannavale and a ton of other A-listers and popular singers. Super colorful, super funny, kid-friendly comedy, with good singing, but without a very strong song. Definitely nice for a watch with the kids (and the big kids too)

Encanto (2021)
Insanely crazy animation. Colours everywhere, moving things everywhere, magic everywhere, music everywhere. With a strong direction and writing, but most important the awesomely great songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, Moana). Also the English voice casting is exceptional, actors like Stephanie Beatriz (NINE-NINE!), John Leguziamo, Wilmer Valderrama, Marรญa Cecilia Botero giving soul to one of the best animation in the last years. Plus shows that the Colombian culture is rad af.
Later edit: I’ve seen that this movie has got some Oscar Nominations. Definitely expected.

James Bond: No Time to Die (2021)
The last James Bond with Daniel Craig is a good Bond movie, Rami Malek is a decent villain, and Ana de Armas is pretty as usual. Nice to see someone else taking the 007 in his place, even for a short while. I guess we’ll see what the future holds for the next James Bond. After all..
007 is just a number

Ray Donovan: The Movie (2022)
The Movie picks up where season seven left off, with Mickey in the wind and Ray determined to find and stop him before he can cause any more carnage. The film also weaves together the present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan feud with Ray and Mickey’s origin story from 30 years ago. Starring Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight.
This TV movie was way better than the last few seasons, well put together, closing almost all plot threads, while keeping a few open, for a possible continuation. Solid ending, most TV series nowadays don’t get this kind of closure

Donโt Look Up (2021)
This movie is insane. It is a good satire regarding the world we’re currently living in. Some compared it to the Coronavirus pandemic, some say that it’s about global warming. It doesn’t even matter, but what’s for sure is that this movie promises a lot with its huge budget and the myriad of A-listers (Leonardo DiCaprio, Ron Perlman, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Jonah Hill, Rob Morgan, Jennifer Lawrence, Timothรฉe Chalamet, Kid Cudi, and Ariana Grande. I mean wow.
The movie has drawn upon it a ton of attention, either praise or criticism, most likely due to marketing budgets and the general stupidity of the human race. While it’s a good movie, it’s definitely not The Shawshank Redemption. It’s not very bad either, it’s somewhere in between, very good if you want to have a good laugh. If you were hoping for a lesson in humanity or something else, you’ll just be disappointed. This movie is made to entertain, not to educate.
Later edit: I’ve seen that this movie has got an Oscar Nomination for best picture. Best satire since Idiocracy? Maybe. Oscar-worthy? Not really.

King Richard (2021)
Pretty good movie, Will Smith shows again that he’s a great actor. The girls playing the Williams sisters are also well picked. A good story told straight.
Later edit: I’ve seen that this movie has got some Oscar Nominations, I think they’re well deserved.

Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)
The island of Iwo Jima stands between the American military force and the home islands of Japan. Therefore the Imperial Japanese Army is desperate to prevent it from falling into American hands and providing a launching point for an invasion of Japan. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (Ken Watanabe) is given command of the forces on the island and sets out to prepare for the imminent attack. General Kuribayashi, however, does not favor the rigid traditional approach recommended by his subordinates, and resentment and resistance fester amongst his staff. In the lower echelons, a young soldier, Saigo (Kazunari Ninomiya), a poor baker in civilian life, strives with his friends to survive the harsh regime of the Japanese Army itself, all the while knowing that a fierce battle looms. When the American invasion begins, Kuribayashi and Saigo find strength, honor, courage, and horrors beyond imagination.
