Pepsi, Where's My Jet? (2022)
When a 20-year-old attempts to win a fighter jet in a Pepsi sweepstakes, he sets the stage for a David versus Goliath court battle for the history books.
It’s a quick and easy entertaining documentary about how marketing can easily fall into misleading advertising, how some people think outside the box and use loopholes in their advantage.
Good pacing, some (former) A-list names, a good case and a lot of corporate mafia shit, sweeping things under the rug. Five popcorns. And fuck Pepsi.
Play that again?

Aftershock: Everest and the Nepal Earthquake (2022)
Survivors’ firsthand accounts and actual footage fuel this emotional docuseries about the deadly 2015 earthquake that shook Nepal.
This is an excellent documentary. You will get viewpoints from tourists to guides to the average citizens. It puts everything into even more perspective about how tragic the event was. And the pace of each episode is very nice. There are no rushed stories, no loud music trying to drum up emotion, just raw footage of people talking about the events and of course raw recorded footage from that day. I will say, while I don’t think I could ever afford to travel to another country, nor handle mountain climbing, this documentary made me have zero interest in ever doing it. Seeing how dangerous it is. What happened literally happened in an instant on the mountain itself. People had zero warning or time to do anything but think their lives were about to end.
Terrifying, but excellent. Five popcorns, if you can eat while your stomach is in your throat.

Asphalt Tango (1996)
A seasoned woman from the show-business world recruits 11 Romanian dancers dreaming of fame and glory to take them to Paris. One of them decides to leave her husband, but he doesn’t take it well and sets out to get her back; plenty of hilarious things happen along the way.
In the turbulent times of the 90s, when the defining factors for Romania were: spontaneous strikes, currency exchange on every street corner and everyone’s dream of becoming a boss, 11 girls who are getting more and more beautiful set off on a bus journey to the mirage life as an artist in Paris. They are accompanied by a dubious local impresario (Florin Calinescu), an unscrupulous driver (Constantin Cotimanis) and a Frenchwoman who looks at life cynically, through the perspective of the harsh world of show-biz (Charlotte Rampling). The unexpected appears in the person of the husband of one of the girls (Mircea Diaconu), who cannot accept the idea that he has been abandoned and sets off on a chase, peppered with car thefts, armed attacks and kidnappings.
This is one of the best Romanian movies, Nae Caranfil’s movie becoming a cult classic. Great pacing, great laughs, a lot of dark humour. If you liked Restul e tacere / The Rest Is Silence (2007), then you’ll love this. Six popcorns and it goes to the Movie Vault.
No trailer could be found on youtube, so I’ve added a link to the full movie. No subtitles though :(

The Defiant Ones (2017)
“The Defiant Ones” examines the partnership between Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre - one the son of a Brooklyn longshoreman, the other straight out of Compton - and their leading roles in a chain of transformative events in contemporary culture.
If it’s the longest Apple Beats commercial, I don’t mind. INot only is it a behind the scenes story of some of the world’s best music (from Springsteen and Petty to NWA and Eminem), it’s the story of an unlikely partnership that evolves and defines the future of the music industry. Even if you are not a fan of hip hop, this series is well worth watching with an open mind - looking towards learning about how art, technology, business and good old American ingenuity changed the world.
The soundtrack is excellent, the cameos are great, all in all it’s a very good watch over a few evenings. Five popcorns.

FIFA Uncovered (2022)
From power struggles to global politics, an exploration of FIFA reveals the organization’s checkered history and what it takes to host a World Cup.
Great four-part documentary about corruption, bribes, trafficking influence, racketeering and a myriad of other illegal stuff. This is not a documentary about sport, this is a documentary about Mafia. Five popcorns.

Raymond & Ray (2022)
Half brothers Raymond and Ray reunite when their estranged father dies - and discover that his final wish was for them to dig his grave. Together, they process who they’ve become as men, both because of their father and in spite of him.
A good dramedy, nicely written, with good cinematography. But what steals the spotlight is the very good acting of Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke. The pacing is not very fast, and along with the dark humour and unexpected tursn, it makes for a good late evening watch. Four popcorns.

Top Gear (2002-) Series 33
Top Gear is back with their 33rd series. This is the trio’s seventh series in this format, with the same hosts as: Chris Harris, Andrew Flintoff and Paddy McGuinness.
Ridiculously expensive cars, fun cars, a lot of adventure, this show is not only for the petrolheads. Six popcorns, as always.

The Bad Batch (2016)
Arlen is abandoned in a Texas wasteland that is fenced off from civilization. While trying to navigate the unforgiving landscape, Arlen is captured by a savage band of cannibals led by the mysterious Miami Man. With her life on the line, she makes her way to The Dream. As she adjusts to life in the bad batch, Arlen discovers that being good or bad mostly depends on who’s standing next to you.
If you like gorey grim dystopian movies like “The Purge” or “Saw”, then this is the one for you. It’s like the writer took “Saw” and “Mad Max” and bashed them together until they made this baby.
It gets as bloody, visceral and cannibalistic as its R rating will allow, with a pretty hard to watch setup scene. If you can stomach that, then you’re in for a treat. Good cinematography, good acting, impressive from a technical point of view, as everything is shot on location. Don’t try to make much sense of the story, this is a movie meant to keep you tense and raise adrenaline levels. Which it does pretty well. Loved the great appearances of Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves, but Jason Momoa’s and Suki Waterhouse’s acting is top notch too.
Four popcorns, but remember it’s not one to see with the kids ;)

Luckiest Girl Alive (2022)
A sharp-tongued New Yorker appears to have it all: a sought-after position at a glossy magazine, a killer wardrobe, and a dream Nantucket wedding on the horizon. But when the director of a crime documentary invites her to tell her side of the shocking incident that took place when she was a teenager at the prestigious Brentley School, Ani is forced to confront a dark truth that threatens to unravel her meticulously crafted life.
A slowly unfolding layered story that mixes pop and mystery. Feels like “Scooby-Doo” meets “13 Reasons Why” meets “Sex and the City”, and not in a very good way. The writing is ok, the movie tries to tell a decent story, but chases around itself so much that it looks that it misses the mark. I love Mila Kunis, and her performance is not bad, but wasn’t enough to make me care too much about her or any of the other overly pretentious entitled rich people around her. However, the performance of Chiara Aurelia was great, really turned this thing over.
Three popcorns, because it’s okey for a lazy day.

Bullet Train (2022)
Unlucky assassin Ladybug (Brad Pitt) is determined to do his job peacefully after one too many gigs has gone off the rails. Fate has other plans, however: Ladybug’s latest mission puts him on a collision course with lethal adversaries from around the globe–all with connected, yet conflicting, objectives–on the world’s fastest train. The end of the line is just the beginning in this non-stop thrill-ride through modern-day Japan.
Fast paced action packed blockbuster flick. There’s not much to say about acting, as this is a pew pew movie. The effects are nice, the cinematography is great (apparently all japan is neon pink) and the stories intertwine and interact in a nice way. Think of a 21-st century “Snatch”. The cast is great, there are many fun scenes, and the cameos are over the top and fun.
Five popcorns.

The Good Nurse (2022)
An overburdened ICU nurse leans on her selfless new colleague at work and at home β until a patient’s unexpected death casts him in a suspicious light.
Suspicious that her colleague is responsible for a series of mysterious patient deaths, a nurse risks her own life to uncover the truth in this gripping thriller based on true events. Directed by Tobias Lindholm.
I’m not a big fan of slow burn movies, but this is captivating. The droning soundtrack, the everlasting feeling of pressure and anxiety. The performance by the two main actors, Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne is absolutely stellar, Eddie feels like a modern-age Al Pacino.
Based on a true story DON’T CLICK THE LINK, MAJOR SPOILERS INSIDE, it highlights corruption in the US medical system, as long with the willingness of medical “corporations” to sweep deaths under the rug to avoid bad publicity and profit losses.
Five popcorns.

The Playlist (2022)
Led by Daniel Ek, a group of passionate young entrepreneurs come together in what seems to be the impossible task to change the music industry - and the world. They set out to create a legal streaming service for music.
This series tells the story of the early days of Spotify as seen through the eyes of some of the most important persons that started and helped the launch of the company.
While the first 5 episodes are pretty well done and told, the last episode is off and falls flat. However, the series itself is well done, the music is great and the acting is well done.
Moreover, the cinematography is brilliant, I loved the surrealism of the hallway in “The Lawyer” episode, or the Matrix-like colour-grading of “The Coder”.
The last episode, “The Artist”, shows Spotify from the side of the underpaid and struggling artist. While it’s based on reality, it’s a lot of agenda pushing and political correctness.
Four popcorns.
