Silent Running (1972)
In a future where all flora is extinct on Earth, an astronaut is given orders to destroy the last of Earth’s botany, kept in a greenhouse aboard a spacecraft.
As this science fiction classic opens, botanist Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern) has spent eight years aboard the space freighter ‘Valley Forge’ preserving the only botanical specimens left from Earth under huge geodesic domes. When he receives orders to destroy the project and return home, Lowell rebels and hijacks the freighter, while plunging the craft into the gaseous Rings of Saturn. From that moment on, he has only the trees, the gardens and two ‘Drone’ robots, Huey and Dewey, to keep him company on his greatest adventure of all. Five popcorns for a great sci-fi movie.

The Gift (2015)
A married couple, Simon and Robyn, run into Gordo, an old classmate. Things take a turn when Gordo begins to drop in unannounced at their house and inundates them with mysterious gifts.
Great thriller starring Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall and Joel Edgerton (which also wrote and directed the movie). A blast, just like any other movie by Joel, great pacing, well-tensioned story, very good acting. Five popcorns.

Uncut Gems (2019)
With his debts mounting and angry collectors closing in, a fast-talking New York City jeweler risks everything in hope of staying afloat and alive.
Good crime thiller starring Adam Sandler in one of his best roles, as a gem deal with troubles all over town, going on a downward spiral of shitshow after shitshow. Four popcorns.

The Running Man (1987)
In a dystopian America, a falsely convicted policeman gets his shot at freedom when he must forcibly participate in a TV game show where convicts, runners, must battle killers for their freedom.
Classic 80s escape movie, with great soundtrack, a good story and dystopian world. Arnold Schwarzenegger does a great job acting the type of roles he used to play, so evreything is set up properly for a good cyberpunk sci-fi thriller. Five popcorns.

Destination Moon (1950)
UP UP UP Seven miles a second! The first manned trip to the moon, happening in the (then) near future, and being funded by a consortium of private backers. Assorted difficulties occur and must be overcome in-flight.
Made in 1950, it is not only very informative in regards to space travel, but also set up pretty much all the things that became space movie tropes. Basically this movie is the inspiration for every space disaster movie, creating all the thriller elements (stuff like getting loose during EVA). All in all, this is not only a classic, this is a reference for future generations. Six popcorns.

Duel (1971)
A business commuter is pursued and terrorized by the malevolent driver of a massive tractor-trailer.
One of Spielberg’s earliest movies. 90 minutes of loud screeches, horn sounds and revving engines in a story that could have been told in 15. I get it, it’s Spielberg, it’s art, it’s something special, it’s classic. It’s crap. While the premise is interesting, the action and unfolding of events is pretty meh, both by 70s and 2023 standards. Saw this on fast forward, not disappointed. You can skip it. Two popcorns.

The Big Year (2011)
Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson are at a crossroads – one is experiencing a mid-life crisis, another a late-life crisis, and the third, a far from ordinary no-life crisis. From David Frankel, the director of The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me, comes a sophisticated comedy about three friendly rivals who, tired of being ruled by obligations and responsibilities, dedicate a year of their lives to following their dreams. Their big year takes them on a cross-country journey of wild and life-changing adventures
Two bird enthusiasts try to defeat the cocky, cutthroat world record holder in a year-long bird-spotting competition. Great fun movie, bringing together a ton of good actors, features the great narration by John Clees, based on the true (but fictionalized) story of Sandy Komito. Four popcorns.

The Dish (2000)
A remote Australian community, populated by quirky characters, plays a key role in the first Apollo moon landing.
When the entire fate of the success of the Apollo 11 program stands in the hands of the people of a local town next to a bigg radio dish, a good comedy appears, starring Sam Neill and Patrick Warburton, among others. Five popcorns for the movie and another 100 for the aAustralian accent.

Blood Diamond (2006)
A fisherman, a smuggler, and a syndicate of businessmen match wits over the possession of a priceless diamond.
Excellent movie about greed, war, and greed again. Leonardo di Caprio makes a good role, same as Djimon Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly. Speaks volumes about greed, soldier children, and how most of Africa is a meat-grinder. Six popcorns and jumps into the Movie Vault.

Papillon (1973)
A French convict in the 1930s befriends a fellow criminal as the two of them begin serving their sentence in the South American penal colony on Devil’s Island, which inspires the man to plot his escape.
Great classic movie starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. There’s not much to say about it just to watch it. The 2017 remake is also good (with Charlie Hunnam), but this is absolutely great. Five popcorns.

Gran Turismo (2023)
Based on the unbelievable, inspiring true story of a team of underdogs - a struggling, working-class gamer, a failed former race car driver, and an idealistic motorsport exec - who risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world.
Directed by Neill Blomkamp (Chappie, District 9, Elysium), this ia another case of a good movie based on a game (more or less). It tells the true story of Jann Mardenborough and his rise from GT racing on PlayStation to actual real racing. The movie is action-packed, has really nice effects and it’s a pleasure to watch on 4K HDR. Four popcorns.

Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)
In 1980, a group of college baseball players navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood.
Fun comedy set in the eighties, directed by Richard Linklater (A Scanner Darkly, Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight), stars Tyler Hoechlin (Clark Kent in Superman & Lois TV series) and Ryan Guzman (from Heroes Reborn), and it makes for a decent time on a rainy afternoon. Three stars because of the great soundtrack.
