Movies
Speed (1994)
A young police officer must prevent a bomb exploding aboard a city bus by keeping its speed above 50 mph.
One of the reference movies of the 90s, this is a movie that keeps you engaged for its entire duration, the chemistry between Neo Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock is fantastic, and they deliver a great thriller with a lot of comedy moments. Six popcorns for one of the must -see movies of the 90s and it drives fast into the Movie Vault.

Fail Safe (1964)
A series of human and computer errors sends a squadron of American ‘Vindicator’ bombers to nuke Moscow. The President, in order to convince the Soviets that this is a mistake, orders the Strategic Air Command to help the Soviets stop them.
This is a great Cold War movie. It’s released in the same year as Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, and it’s like it’s more serious counterpart. Treating the same issue, the first moments of what can be an all-out thermo-nuclear war, the movie directed by Sidney Lumet takes a more direct and serious note on foreign policy, internal affairs and war in a world that used to revolve around two super-powers. The movie is filled with brilliant famous actors put in greatly-written roles.
Today the world power is no longer divided by the Iron Curtain, but the lessons of Failsafe have yet to be learned.
In a nuclear war, everyone loses.
Six popcorns and flies into the Movie Vault.

The Seventh Continent // Der siebente Kontinent (1989)
A European family who plan on escaping to Australia seem caught up in their daily routine, only troubled by minor incidents. However, behind their apparent calm and repetitive existence, they are actually planning something sinister.
This movie is told to be a cinematic orgasm. Slow burning story unfolding mixed with static cinematic shots, revealing real portions of the every day life of his realistic characters. Over-pretentious crap to self-stroke the artistic egos of critics.
While it feels that nothing noteworthy is happening, the story slowly progresses towards something darker, that is not poetic, nor artistic.
The story is about a bored family going to the extreme and starting to do dumb shit. There’s an act that goes on for about 25 minutes where they just destroy things. I can understand the metaphor of leaving everything behind, but 3 minutes of flushing money down the toilet is dumb.
While I understand the “artistic” part, it feels like it’s been pushed to extreme and I can understand where the Romanian movies take their inspiration from.
Two popcorns, because while this is not a bad movie, it’s not one I can recommend to anyone, unless they like to be tortured.
Oh, and this is the first movie of a trilogy and seeing this made me want to skip the other two. I’ll just read a summary somewhere.
PS: And no, this is not based on a real story, the myth was created by Haneke making vague references to discovering the story in a news article.

Cadoul de Crăciun // The Christmas Gift (2018)
A son’s letter to Santa for Christmas turns his father’s evening into a thriller he did not ask for.
A good short movie about writing bad things about the party or the Supreme Leader. Circling around comedy, drama and tragedy, the movie is an excellent quick watch about life on the edge in uncertain times.

Liceenii în alertă // High schoolers on alert (1993)
The very popular Romanian series continues, this time with a police comedy. Ionica is mistaken for a drug dealer and arrested, and his friends try to discover and uncover the truth.
Trying to capitalize on the success of the previous movies, the studio went for the comic police comedy, but lacks vision, freshness and falls very short of expectations. I initially forgot that this even existed, and altough it has a very good cast, the writing is sub par and the fact that it lacks the visionary direction of Nicolae Corjos (the director of the previous movies) can be seen and felt. Socrates is gone, Isosceles is a joke, the movie has nothing to do with the original movies, except being placed in the same universe and continuing (badly) the stories of a few of the characters. One popcorn and it’s one you can skip. Not even Gheorghe Dinica can save this one. We can just pretend that this doesn’t exist.

Liceenii Rock'n'Roll // High Schoolers: Rock'n'Roll (1992)
The two principal characters have a love affair, with highs and lows accompanied by the Rock’n’Roll music played by their band.
The last movie in the series focusing on the pupils of Isosceles and Socrates, and the only one made after the communist regime downfall. It’s blending comedy, romance, music and drama in a good direct sequel of Liceenii, cementing the status of superstars to actor-singers Stefan Banica Jr. and Oana Sarbu. Five popcorns for a movie made in a more free world where we were allowed to see Oana Sarbu’s tits.

Extemporal la dirigentie (1987)
The film tells the love relationship of Anca, the daughter of the philosophy teacher Socrates, with Doru, a classmate. The teacher is worried, thinking that Anca might be neglecting her school preparations.
Following the same format and ideas of the previous movies, this movie focuses on Socrates’ daughter and her love interest. Featuring great cameos from the other high schoolers (some of them in college now), the movie perfectly blends innocence, angst, drama and comedy. Seven popcorns and it goes into the Movie Vault, along with the others.

Liceenii // The Graduates (1986)
Lceenii is a Romanian romance film from 1986, directed by Nicolae Corjos. The main roles were played by actors Ștefan Bănică-junior, Mihai Constantin, Oana Sârbu, Cesonia Postelnicu, Tudor Petruț, Tamara Buciuceanu-Botez and Ion Caramitru. The film presents the love story between two 10th grade students: Mihai Marinescu (Ștefan Bănică Jr.) and Dana Vasilescu (Oana Sârbu). Their idyll will go through many trials.
Excellent spin-off of Declaratie de dragoste, focusing around other pupils of Socrates and Isosceles. Excellently made as well, launched the careers of Stefan Banica Jr. and Oana Sarbu and set the base for the following two movies. Six popcorns and goes into the Movie Vault.

Declarație de dragoste // Confessions of Love (1985)
The trials and tribulations of two high school students deeply in love with each other, but facing the challenge of their completely different social backgrounds, during the twilight of the communist Romania.
The first movie in the “Liceenii” saga, it tells the love story of Ioana and Alexandru, two high-schoolers face their feelings and their parents and teachers in a classig story. Its success made the communist regime spawn a number of sequels and spin-offs, revolving around the pupils of the two brilliant teachers, Socrates and Isoscelles, played magnificently by Ion Caramitru and Tamara Buciuceanu-Botez, respectively. This romantic dramedy is excellent and is one of the best Romanian movies out there. Seven popcorns and jumps into the Movie Vault.

Căsătorie cu repetiție // Repeated Wedding (1985)
After their divorce in Bucharest, a couple is to meet again in the province thanks to their work and they’re still trying to settle appearances while staying as separated as possible.
The sequel of Buletin de Bucuresti, it picks up the story of Radu and Silvia after their divorce at the end of the first movie. It’s also funny and well made and it is one of the funniest Romanian romantic comedies. All in all, five popcorn and jumps into the Movie Vault.

Buletin de București // Bucharest Identity Card (1982)
A young graduate tries to get a Bucharest ID card in comunist Romania, by pretending to marry a taxi driver.
Excellent Romanian comedy about a girl who wants to get a job in the capital, so she sets up a fake convenience marriage, to be able to have an identity card issued in Bucharest. But everything goes bad when her parents, his parents-in-law come visiting unannounced right in ther first days of marriage. Basically this is communist Meet the Fockers, but more fun. Five popcorns and it gets into the Movie Vault.

The master is Temistocle T. Temistocle. The aprentice is Alecu A. Alecu. Together they formed one of the most funny couple of crooks wich manage to cheat unhappy women and steal their money under the promise of marriage.
Made during the golden age of Communist Comedy Cinema, this is on e of the best appreciated comedies until now. Starring the genius Dem Radulescu and Stela Popescu, with the support of Sebastian Papaiani and every other great actor of the time, something definitely worth watching.
