As you might remember, back in October 2024 I posted an article named “Lost in Translation” which got translated in quite a few languages.

In the follow up post, Lost and Found in Translation I said how I’m going to ask some friends more things about their country and their language.

I am continuing this project in 2026 with the help of Elanor, who also did the Spanish translation, available here.

Enjoy!

Tell me something about your country or your language that people always get wrong

People often confuse things from Spanish-speaking countries with things from Spain… For example, burritos aren’t Spanish food… We don’t wear big round hats; that’s from Mexican culture.

Tell me something you would recommend a tourist to try in your country or city

Madrid is a very touristy city in the center of Spain, with a rich history and many things to see. As a tourist, I would recommend walking around the Madrid de los Austrias and having some tapas there: La Plaza Mayor, La Calle Mayor, El Mercado de San Miguel, La Plaza de la Villa, and La Cava Baja. You could also visit the Palacio Real. And just 45 minutes from the capital is the Monastery of El Escorial, which you absolutely cannot miss.

If you’re up for venturing a little further, I would recommend leaving the capital and taking a day trip to Toledo, Segovia, or Aranjuez. If you enjoy seeing places that transport you back in time and evoke emotions, you won’t regret it.

As for Benidorm, what can I say… It’s a quintessential tourist destination, with a wonderful beach and a vibrant atmosphere all year round.

Recommend me a song in your language

I don’t know, I’m getting on in years… I’m not up to date with current music…
I belong to a generation (the 80s) where there was a huge explosion of pop music groups in Spain.
I’ll give you a couple of songs I liked, but it would be difficult to choose with so many that I enjoyed.

Luz Casal - No Me Importa Nada
Presuntos Implicados - Como Hemos Cambiado

Recommend me a movie in your language

I like entertaining movies; I’m not really into deep films that replace therapy… With that in mind, my favorite Spanish director is Álex de la Iglesia. I would recommend any of his films, especially
The Day of the Beast
Mutant Action
Common Wealth
or The Perfect Crime

Recommend me a book in your language

"El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha" (Miguel de Cervantes, 1605)

Have I gone too far? Okay, something more modern then: “El Club Dumas” (Arturo Pérez-Reverte, 1993)

Recommend me a website or a blog from your country (in your language or in English)

https://www.ascodevida.com/
In their own words: Asco de Vida (Life Sucks) is a collection of anecdotes that have ruined your day. Why keep it to yourself when you can bring a smile to thousands of people? Your misfortune can be our source of amusement. Send us your ADV (Adventures in Life), it’s easy, fast, and no registration required!

What’s your current phone or computer wallpaper? Does it have a particular meaning?

My apartment in Benidorm is on the 19th floor… From there you can see a large part of the coast, not only of Benidorm but also of the nearby towns: Altea, Calpe… My wallpaper is a photo I took in the early morning showing the sun rising over the coast and illuminating these towns, while it’s still relatively dark where I took it… Beautiful :)

Send me a representative photo for your country or language

This is quite complicated. Spain is a very diverse land, with many different people and places. I don’t know if it’s possible, or at least I find it very difficult to imagine something that represents everyone… We even have different languages throughout the country: Galician, Catalan, Basque… And to top it all off, we even have Spanish people who don’t want to be Spanish.
